John R. Fordyce was an engineer, inventor, amateur historian,
archaeologist, and candidate for U.S. Congress. An Arkansas native,
Fordyce was a member of Dr. Frederick A. Cook's expidition to the Arctic
in 1894 and in 1917 was commissioned by Major of Engineers and put in
charge of the construction of Camp Pike. Fordyce was also a member of
the DeSoto Commission, a position to which he was appointed by Franklin
