They are sorted into general categories, including James Merrill, Family, Friends, and Places. However, some photographs may overlap categories. For example, there may be family photographs in with friends, and vice versa. Scope: Some photographs have labels on the back indentifying the photograph; the labels were put on by staff or scholars. Words written in pencil in brackets [ ], on the back of the photographs were written by staff to identify the photograph. Some photographs are identified by the label on the folder they are in.
