Scope and Contents Note

Scudder is the principal correspondent and collector in the collection. The majority of the letters are addressed to him and/or his wife. The miscellaneous documents, clippings, autographs, appear to have been collected by him, although no particular pattern is discernible. Subjects are primarily concerned with social matters and his editing work, in particular the preparation of his biography of James Russell Lowell. Items are arranged alphabetically by name of principal person. Of particular note in the collection are the Rev. Timothy Edward notebooks (1723), the Rev. Samuel Buell sermons (1746-1747), the single page of James Fenimore Cooper’s The Oak Openings , the draft of the James Monroe letter to the Committee of Publick Safety respecting Jay’s Treaty (1794), and the John Greenleaf Whittier letters to Scudder concerning the preparation of the Riverside edition of his writings.
