Scope and Contents Note
The collection consists primarily of historical documents relating to
the city and county of St. Louis, with some items relating to other
geographical areas. Included are deeds of sale for land and slaves,
transfers of title for land, land grants, abstracts of title, legal
briefs, court decrees, rent receipts, promissory notes, and wills. Of
particular note are the minutes of a committee concerned with
establishing a public hospital in St. Louis, dated May 2, 1831, and
signed by the committee members including many prominent St. Louisans of
the time. Miscellaneous items include two letters, a patent register, a
report of expenses and profits of concessions at the World’s Columbian
Exposition at Chicago, two printed circulars advertising lots for sale
in St. Louis County subdivisions, ca. 1904. Several items relate to the
Joseph peters Furniture Co., one of the most prominent furniture
manufacturers in the city in the late 19th century.
