Born in Knightstown, Indiana, George P. Elliott was an American novelist and academic who was educated at the University of California at Berkley. Beginning in 1947, he taught at a number of universities including Cornell, the University of Iowa, the University of California at Berkeley, Barnard College, and Syracuse University, where he spent the major part of his career. Elliott died in 1980 in New York City.

Elliott was a versatile writer whose books include four novels and numerous collections of short stories, poems, and essays. His books were well received by critics and, in some cases, notably Parktilden Village (1958) and Among the Dangs (1961), heralded as modern day classics. Nonetheless, Elliott's work is often overlooked by contemporary critics and scholars.
