Biographical / Historical Note

John Ira Parcel was born on October 24, 1878 in Westfield, Illinois. He graduated from Westfield College in 1903 and the University of Illinois in 1909 before going on to do graduate work at the University of London. Parcel later taught structural engineering at both the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois. He began his engineering career with the American Bridge Company and helped form the engineering firm of Sverdrup and Parcel in 1928, where he acted as vice president until his death. In June 1955, Parcel was awarded an honorary degree from Washington University. Parcel died in St. Louis on May 22, 1965.
