For the July Term thereof in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven,

St Louis County Ss: Harry DickHarry Dick a free colored person negro man permitted
by the Judge in vocation to sue as a pauper for freedom by
J. SpaldingJ Spalding his attorney assigned by said Judge complains of Ste
phen SmithSmith of a plea of trespass, For that said SmithSmith on
the first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven at the County aforesaid
with force and arms &, C, made an assault upon him said
Harry DickHarry Dick found Then & there beatbruised and ill treated him the
said plaintiff and then and there imprisoned him and kept
and detained him a prisoner there without any reasona
ble or probable cause whatsoever for a long time to suit for
one month then next following, & and hitherto: Contrary to law
and against the will of said plaintiff and said plaintiff
doth over that said plaintiff held and detained him and
doth still hold and detain him in slavery: and said
plaintiff then and there did other wrong to said plaintiff
To his damage of five hundred dollars and
therefore he sues &,C,
