Benjamin L Mathews of lawful age being produced sworn and
examined on the part of the defendant aforesaid and sayth
that JuliaJulia the plaintiff in the above cause was taken to
MissouriMissouri and hired out to service in MissouriMissouri - that she
became sick in MissouriMissouri and remained sick for some time
-that she was taken back to New CarringtonCarrington in PikePike county
in IllinoisIllinois to be nursed and restored to health that
while at New CarringtonCarrington she was not employed in any
kind of work but was nursed and restored to health-
and that as soon as she was able to work she was taken to
Saint LouisSt Louis and sold - tha he was the individual
who took the plaintiff from MissouriMissouri to New CarringtonCarrington
when sick and that he heard New CarringtonCarrington say before
the plaintiff was [ brot ] back to her house that as soon as
JuliaJulia the plaintiff was recovered she would send her
back to MissouriMissouri and sold or hired out to some person
other than the one who had hired at that time and
as her reasons for doing so she said that Mr StuartStuart her
employer was not such a man as she wanted JuliaJulia to be
with - And that he has frequently heard both Carring
- ton and Joseph CarringtonJoseph Carrington say that they had no inten
-tion of making a slave of JuliaJulia in the state of IllinoisIllinois
