Personally appeared in open
court arthurLmagrins and made oath that
he was employed as Counsel in said causes that
before the institution of said suits this affiant
had several conversations with Charles. D. St.
Vrain that said StSt Vrain VrainSt Vrain on the request of
affiant made an affidavit upon which
an order was obtained from the of this
court permitting said suits to be brought that
this affiant had the sole management of said
causes committed to his case, that before and
subsequent to the institution of said suits affiant
had repeated conversations with said StSt Vrain VrainSt Vrain
who on every and on all occassions informed
him that he said StSt Vrain VrainSt Vrain well know said plaintiff
and due Joshua Pahlen to whom the
said plaintiffs had belonged as slave, that he had

frequently seen said plaintiff in the possession
as said PahlenPahlen at the form and residence of
said PahlenPahlen in the state of IllinoisIllinois, and that
for a considerable space of time, that is to
say for several months, & during which time
said Louse performed menial officer for and
was treated by, said PahlenPahlen , as his said slave
this affiant further states, that in consequence
of the information devined form said StSt Vrain VrainSt Vrain
relying upon his testimony and knowing him
to be a residant of the city of St LouisSt Louis he did
not that it was necessary to look
for other testimony in order to sustain the
issues on the part of the said plaintiff
that this affiant inquired and could not find
that there was any other person residing with
in the juridiction of this court by whom
he could prove the same facts which
he an understood from said StSt Vrain VrainSt Vrain could be
proved by him, that said plaintiff LouiseLouise Vincent
VincentLouise Vincent is an ignorant person genticaly
relied above the legal skill and professional
fidelity of this affiant to couldnot her said
cause, and was entirely governed in the con-
duct thereof by his openion and advice this
affiant further states that it was at his in-
stance and on his promise to manage the suits
of said minor AdolpheAdolphe and MarcellineMarcelline
that said StSt Vrain VrainSt Vrain consented to appear us
thin next friend. This affiant further states
