David H. Bishop who being ofuse
first duly sworn upon his oath says
that he was a deputysheriffunder
SamuelSamuel Councy sheriff of St LouisSt Louis
serving for two years previous to
August last; that he knowsPierrePierre
of color, whose suit for freedom
vsGabrielGabriel S Chouteau S ChouteauGabriel S Chouteau is now
pending in the Circuit CourtCircuit Court of
St LouisSt Louiscounty; that the said PierrePierre
was to the sheriff Councy
about the 5th day of April 1848.by the Mr.Churchill who then
had him, on account of his
strangeconduct; that the time for
which he was hired to saidChurchill
had notthenexpired, but he was
unwillinglonger to keephim
butchoserather to pay his bond in
jail and his hireand lose the
service he was able to ;
that the sheriff was unable to hire
him out afterwards to any one.
