Be it remembered that on this
21st day of August 1852 personally
appeared Charles HMercier before
me the undersigned Justice of the
Peace, and the said Mercier being
duly sworn, upon his oath states
that PierrePierre the plaintiff in the
suit of PierrePierre (of color) vsGabrielGabriel S Chouteau SGabriel S Chouteau
ChouteauGabriel S Chouteau has been restrained by
the defendant GabrielGabriel S Chouteau SGabriel S Chouteau .ChouteauGabriel S Chouteau
and a man named BartlettBartlett
of the reasonable liberty of attending
his Counsel & the Court; that said
PierrePierre has been subjected to severity
on account of his application
for freedom, that on Friday the
13th Aug 1852 said PierrePierre was
locked up in a cell of the jail
of the County of St LouisCounty of St Louis & whipped
violently on account of his claim
for freedom, that on Monday the
16th Aug 1832 plaintiff's Counsel
was prohibited & that at or about
ten o clock in the evening of said
last mentioned day, said Chouteau
& Bartlett took PierrePierre away
from said jail & concealed him
