And the said Defendants come & defend
the wrong & injury when he & for plea say that they did not falsely
imprison the said plaintiff in manner and form as is above engaged
by them & of this they put themselves upon the county & c

And for further plea in this behalf the said defandants come & say that
the said plantiffs Catharine Minta Felix & William were not free
persons nor was either of them in manner & form as the said plain
-tiffs have alleged & of this they put themselves upon the Country & c
And for further plea in this behalf the said defendants say that
at the date of the filing the petition & declaration on this behalf the
said plaintiffs were Slaves, the property of one Eli West
and this they are ready to wherefor they pray Judgement & c
