The St. Louis directory for 1848 /

Our work is now before you, and for the kind support we have re-
ceived from the public generally, we tender our sincere thanks. We
have endeavored, so far as possible, to obtain the name of every male
citizen of St. Louis, and also his place of business and residence, and
believe we have fulfilled (he intention of our work. To be as accurate
as possible, (we have spared no trouble, and to make our work profitable
and neat, we have spared no pains or expense. It is more than possible
that, on account of frequent changes of residences, we have failed in ob-
taining the names of a few, for which we will not be blamed when the
manner in which we canvassed the city is known—commencing at one
end of the city and working immediately through, so that persons moving
to any portion of the city canvassed, would of course be missed.

We have made arrangements to continue publishing the City Directory
yearly; and as this is our first attempt, we hope its imperfections may
be, as much as possible, overlooked, as it is our intention to make the
second edition without a fault. With these few prefatory remarks, we
submit our work to its kind patrons.
