Preface.

A full and accurate city directory has long been needed and called for by the citizens of
St. Louis, and we have spared no labor nor expense to make this work such an one as shall meet
the demands of the public.

The canvassing of names was performed by, and under the superintendence of Capt. Henry
Almstedt for the First and Second Wards. Mr. Presley Athey for the Fifth and Sixth Wards,
assisted by Mr. E. A. Williams in the Third and Fourth Wards.

In the following pages may be found the names of all the heads of families and persons car-
rying on business at the time the above gentlemen visited the different parts of the City, arranged
in regular alphabetic order ; also the names of the streets, together with other valuable infor-
mation.

The compilation and arrangement of the work has been under the immediate supervision of
Mr. T. H. Knox, and we have added to the General Directory—a Business Directory, which will
be found convenient for business men.

We do not claim perfection in this work, still we feel confident that a generous public will
overlook all minor defects, and accord to the work that share of patronage it may deserve.

As we design to make the work permanent, our next, we hope to make much more complete.

With these few prefatory remarks, we now submit this our first city directory to the
citizens of St. Louis.
