Abbreviations. — — The following key to the abbreviations adopted in this work may be found useful,
in enabling persons not familiar with Directories to properly understand them. We have made as few of
these as possible. In future volumes, with a view to secure compactness, we may adopt others :— —

The (c.) enclosed in parenthesis, after a name, denotes colored; c.,corner; lab.,laborer; carp.,carpenter; b.,between; ne.,north-east; nw,north-west; se.,south-east; sw.,south-west; ns.,north side; ss.,south side; es.,east side; ws.,west side; r.,residence; opp.,opposite; s.,south; w.,west;
e.,east; n.,north; av.,avenue; and st.,street.

City And Ward Boundaries.
City Boundary.

The city is bounded east by the Mississippi river,
south by Keokuk street, and west and north by
Grand avenue and Spring street.

First Ward.

All that part of the city lying south of a line be-
ginning on the Mississippi, at the foot of Souluvd
street, thence west along Soulard to Kosciusko,
thence northwardly along Soulard to Linn street,
thence westwardly along Lafayette avenue to the
western lino of tho city.

Second Ward.

All the territory lying north of the First Ward, and
south of a line beginning on the Mississippi, at the
foot of Convent street, running westwardly along
Convent street to Carondelet avenue, then south-
wardly to Hickory street, then westward aloag
Hickory to Grattan street, then southwardly along
Grattan street to Park avenue, then westward along
Park avenue to the western line of the city.

Third Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Second Ward,
and south of a line commencing on the Mississippi
river, at the foot of Plum street, running wostwanlly
along Plum to Fourth street, thence westwardly
along Cerre to Fourteenth street, thence westwardly
along the Pacitic Railroad line to the western limit
of the city.

Fourth Ward.

A11 the territory lying north of the Third Ward,
ana south of a line commencing at the foot of Market
street, thence running westardly to Tenth street,
inenco southwardly along Tenth to Clark avenue,
thenee westwardly along Clark avenue to the western
line of the city.

Fifth Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Fourth Ward,
and south of a line commencing at the foot of Oliev
street, thence westwardly along Olive to the western
line of the city.

Sixth Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Fifth Ward,
and south of a line commencing at the foot of Green
street, thence west along Green to Eleventh street,
thence westwardly along Christy avanue to Pratte
avenue, thence westwardly along Lucas avenue to the
western line of the city.

Seventh Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Sixth Ward,
I and south of a line commencing on the Mississippi
liver, at the foot of Cherry street, thence west along
Cherry to Broadway, thence weslwardly along Frank-
lin avenue to the western liue of the city.

Eighth Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Seventh Ward,
and south of a line commencing on the Mississippi
river, at the foot of Biddle street, thence west alone
Biddle to Pratte avenue, thence westwardly along
Gamble street to the western line of the city.

Ninth Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Eighth Ward,
and south of a line commencing on the Mississippi
river, at the foot of Howard street, thence west along
Howard to Eighteenth, thence southwardly along
Eighteenth to Cam avenue, thence westwardly along
Cass avenue to the western line of the city.

Tenth Ward.

All the territory lying north of the Ninth Ward,
within the city limits, constitutes the Tenth Ward.
In all cases the center of the above named Streets
and avenues are the dividing lines between the wards.
