The following List was prepared for the St. Louis Directory of 1861, and its preparation cost the
Publisher upwards of $200. Owing to the interruption of business, by causes incident to the war,
that volume was not published. We present the list now, for the purpose of showing who the
"solid men" of St. Louis were, at that date, and shall also prepare a correct List for the next
volume, which will afford an interesting comparison, and show, to a great extent, the influence
which existing troubles have had upon business and the financial condition of the people. This
List, it will be observed, embraces only such firms and persons as are assessed on $9,000 and
upwards.
