Interview with Rev. Ralph Abernathy

You want to pick up when we were—telling us about calling a prayer?

Rev. Ralph Abernathy:

Yes, I returned to the sanctuary of West 100th Street Baptist Church and I called for prayer. I asked the people to pray for the families of these four beautiful young people that had been slain while studying the Sunday School lesson in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. I called on the congregation to pray for the perpetrators of these vicious acts and I called upon the people to rededicate themselves and pray for a sick nation that would tolerate acts of injustice like that. And pray for the President of the United States that he would be more courageous, and pray for the Justice Department so that they would always be our friend, the friend of freedom and equality.
