Interview with Rev. Ralph Abernathy
QUESTION 43
CALLIE CROSSELY:

OK, we're moving on to the March on Washington. There was a great deal of controversy in Washington around the speech that John Lewis written[sic]. Are you aware of that? Can you describe that as you knew about it?

Rev. Ralph Abernathy:

Well, I don't think that it was much controversy, John Lewis just speaking for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, as its President. John Lewis just wanted to say some things in the script that was much more radical than Roy Wilkins of the NAACP and Whitney Young of the National Urban League thought was necessary, and they solved the problem and everybody was pleased about it. I guess, other than the press.
