Interview with Mary Frances Berry
QUESTION 4
JACKIE SHEARER:

Now, does affirmative action connote inferiority?

MARY FRANCIS BERRY:

Affirmative action has nothing to do with inferiority. People try to define it that way, know that again, you can win the game by the way you define things. What affirmative action says is that people who have been left out in the past, we're going to see to it that they are including. It doesn't mean that if they can't do a job, or if they can't do something, or if they can't pass the course, the ought to be permitted to pass on, or they ought to be permitted to have the job. But it's to open the doors for people, who can do, but who haven't been permitted to.
