Interview with Dr. John O. Brown
QUESTION 11
MADISON DAVIS LACY:

Do you recall any experience of somebody who was close to you undergoing that?

DR. JOHN O. BROWN:

Yes, ah, I know a number of families. As far as the highway relocation was concerned, the State of Florida, if they had appropriated 40 thousand dollars, they would have been able to give the Black families who had, who were displaced a subsidy to move into better housing in other areas of the county. But the State of Florida did not see fit to even appropriate the 40 thousand dollars. So individuals who had the little, small homes and owned the property in Overtown, were given about three thousand dollars and they had to move into areas where the cost of housing was 30 and 40 thousand dollars at that time. So they were unable to purchase homes.

MADISON DAVIS LACY:

OK, we have to roll out.
