So if you could start again, telling me about reading about the Southern movement and knowing what the issues were in the North.

JOHN CONYERS:

Well, we, we watched with some interest the development of the Civil Rights Movement in the South. And we had this connection between Martin King, Abernathy, Andy Young, and the top King people. SCLC, of course, was brought about because the existing civil rights organizations were reluctant to adopt a confrontational strategy about breaking de jure segr- segregation in the South.
