Interview with John Doar
QUESTION 27
INTERVIEWER:

BUT THE, IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. WERE YOU SURPRISED?

John Doar:

Well, you know, I don't, I don't exactly remember what my emotion was at the time, I mean, I was, I've got to admit I was surprised when I got to the door of the Regents' Office, and, and when the door opened there was on the threshold, was the governor of the state of Mississippi there blocking the door. I got to say to you that I didn't anticipate that, and he had a proclamation, and he read it, in which the end line was I refuse to register you under the authority of the laws of the state of Mississippi. So we left.** And, uh, then we went back the next day, I mean, and there was no lack of resolution on the federal government's part that James Meredith was going to be registered, there was no question about the fact that that was going to happen.
