Interview with Dr. Robert Ellis
QUESTION 1
INTERVIEWER:

NOW THAT FIRST LETTER FROM JAMES MEREDITH THAT CAME TO YOU. HE IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS A NEGRO AND HE ASKED FOR ADMISSION. UM, COULD YOU TELL ME JUST A BIT ABOUT YOUR RESPONSE TO THAT PERSONALLY AND UH, OFFICIALLY?

Dr. Robert Ellis:

Well the letter that came from James Meredith was uh, something of uh, I guess a shock. Um, we realized, I realized that we had an unusual problem. We were required to make copies of any correspondence or forms that were from uh, blacks and these were sent to the office of the board of trustees. I uh, conferred with uh, Mr. Hugh Claig [spelling?] who was then the director of development at the University. Mr. Claig was a, a former official with the FBI and uh, he served as uh, a resource uh, in dealing with uh this particular kind of problem.
