Interview with Dr. Robert Ellis
QUESTION 20
INTERVIEWER:

UM, WELL CAN YOU STOP FOR A MOMENT?

CAMERA CREW MEMBER:

MARKER.

Dr. Robert Ellis:

Well, as the University's registrar it was my responsibility to register all students. I was uh, called to Jackson uh, in the Board of Trustees' office, then in the Wolfolk building for the purpose of registering James Meredith. On that occasion I never saw him. I subsequently learned that he was intercepted and uh, turned away by the governor of the state. There was the later occasion on the campus of the University in which uh, we were located in the extension building over in one end of the campus. On that occasion the registrar, the uh, governor read a document where he assumed the responsibilities and the role of the registrar and uh, then read a notation or a document to James Meredith uh, denying him admission to the University.
