Interview with Phyllis Ellison
QUESTION 15
JACKIE SHEARER:

So was your attitude a nonviolent one at that time?

PHYLLIS ELLISON:

My attitude was nonviolent but if, um, my rights were being that violated, I wasn't going to be, take being called a nigger laying down, or being smacked in the face and, and turn the other cheek. No, I, I wouldn't do that. When someone called me a nigger I'd say White boy or White girl or whitie. I wouldn't turn the other cheek.
