QUESTION 27
INTERVIEWER:

OK, PICK UP THAT MEDGAR WAS THE FIRST TO APPLY…

Myrlie Evers:

Medgar was the first known black to apply for admission to the University of Mississippi. Uh, he filled out uh, all applications uh, he was called for an interview um, particularly with the Governor. And uh, in the interview they wanted to know why he wanted to go to Old Miss. Uh, he did reply that he wanted to study law and he felt that it was, it was his right to be able to uh, to do that. And with some of the other questions that were asked, I recall Medgar saying – "Yes, and I told them too, that I bathed everyday, and that this black didn't come off, they would have nothing to fear with that." But uh, he felt very strongly about uh, education, and the power that it would give blacks to move ahead uh, in, into society.
