Interview with James Farmer
QUESTION 17
INTERVIEWER:

OK, SO, PICTURES OF THE BURNING AND THE MOB VIOLENCE THAT WENT AROUND THE WORLD, WHAT WAS THE INTERNATIONAL IMPACT?

James Farmer:

Oh, it was tremendous, the international impact of the Freedom Rides was tremendous. I think the photograph of that burning bus at Anniston was on the front page of every newspaper in the world. It seemed so to me. And as soon as the photograph came out, I saw it in the Washington Post and immediately called my staff members in New York and asked them to get a copy of that photograph and superimpose it on a photograph of the Statue of Liberty in the torch of Miss Liberty and to use that composite photograph as the symbol of the Freedom Ride from that point on. And that was done.
