Interview with Nicholas Katzenbach
QUESTION 3
INTERVIEWER:

LETS DO A STOP NOW FOR A MOMENT, JOHN.

Nicholas Katzenbach:

Well, Meredith, who wanted to go to Old Miss was a citizen of the state of Mississippi and felt that, uh, as he should have, that he was entitled to go to the state University, which he qualified for, was a man of enormous courage and enormous determination that he was going to have that happen. It did happen. It happened as a result of bringing some 14 thousand troops down into the state of Mississippi to protect uh, Meredith. This irritated him, greatly, in fact he was not pleased with the justice department although it wasn't clear why he wasn't, uh, he felt that couple of times he said to me, take all these troops away, take the marshals away, I'm a citizen in Mississippi and I want to go to school here just like everybody else, and I think at that time uh, Mr. Meredith would have lasted about 24 hours, uh, if uh, or less, if he hadn't had constant protection.
