Interview with Nicholas Katzenbach
QUESTION 6
INTERVIEWER:

AT ANY POINT DURING THE RIOTS DID YOU THINK MAYBE THE MARSHALLS WERE GOING TO BE ROUTED?

Nicholas Katzenbach:

No, I was concerned. The thing that concerned me the most was that the marshals were all armed. They all had guns, and they were under very strict orders that they could not use those guns. Uh, and they didn't, even though they were being shot at. They used a lot of teargas, and they were very much concerned about Meredith, his physical safety. And what we did was John Doar, who is a man of great courage, uh, he and two marshals.
