Interview with John Lewis
QUESTION 7
INTERVIEWER:

WAS THAT THE FIRST TIME YOU WERE ARRESTED?

John Lewis:

Was the first time that I was arrested, and growing up in the rural south it was not the thing to do, not to go to jail. It was a, it was, it would bring shame and disgrace on the family. But for me, I tell you, it was like being involved in a holy crusade. It was, became a badge of, of honor. ** I felt good about it. And I think it was in keeping with what we had been taught, in the workshops. So I felt very good in, in a sense of righteous indignation about being arrested, but at the same time the commitment and dedication on the part of the students.
