Interview with Russell Oswald
QUESTION 11
SHEILA C. BERNARD:

inmate?

RUSSELL OSWALD:

I decided to go into D yard for, ah, humanitarian reasons. I knew that the hostages were in a very difficult situation. They had been beaten, I knew that. I knew that they were harassed. I also felt that to do otherwise than to go in there would leave me with one option that was to go in armed. And there would be ah unfavorable consequences. Ah people would be killed, invariably. So I decided that I could do better going in there and trying to talk them into reasonableness. That was my hope. Unfortunately it didn't turn out just the way I hoped it would.
