Interview with William Rutherford
QUESTION 19
INTERVIEWER:

You told me that in the weeks following there was this general feeling about, come to the door, can you tell us?

WILLIAM RUTHERFORD:

Oh, it took me ages and ages to accept the fact that Dr. King was definitely dead. He was such an active man. He was such a force and a presence and his presence continued and continues to live on and many, many people including myself and, it was just unbelievable and I suppose psychological unacceptable that he would not be coming back. And in the midst of all this chaos and pandemonium in the SCLC office and headquarters I kept expecting Dr. King to walk through the door at any minute saying, "Alright, come on, this is great. But why don't we stop the nonsense now and get back to work."

INTERVIEWER:

Can we do that again but without clock in the background.
