When you're 16 years old how bad can the fear get?

RUBY SALES:

It can get very bad.

INTERVIEWER:

RUBY SALES:

It can get very bad. I mean the fear can get very bad. I mean, one of the things that always happened in those situations, you became very afraid is that there would be absolute silence. In the car there would be absolute silence and the only thing that you could hear would almost be your own heart beating. But when you recognized that you had passed the danger then people would burst out laughing and talking as a way of releasing the kind of fear that they had gone through. So fear was something that we lived with on a day to day basis in the county.
