BOBBY KENNEDY CALLS YOU IN THE MORNING OF HIS ATTEMPTS TO CALL OFF THE FREEDOM RIDERS, SPECIFICALLY MENTIONING…

John Seigenthaler:

-Uh- When the phone rang, uh, two o'clock, I was in a motel, was wakened, it was the Attorney General, told me the Freedom Riders were coming down and - uh - he said they were coming from Nashville. He asked me if I -if I knew them. Of course, I recognized the names. They were people who were active in - in Civil Rights activities, not only in Nashville, but across the South. He specifically mentioned Diane Nash. -uh- I didn't feel that I really knew her well enough to have any influence -uh- with her, but I told him that I would call - uh - I, I remember specifically calling a lawyer named George Barrett who knew her quite well. -uh - He, in effect, said, "John, ain't nobody gonna turn this around."
