Interview with Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth
QUESTION 57
INTERVIEWER:

SO WHAT DID, WHAT DID WHITE PEOPLE IN BIRMINGHAM HAVE TO LOSE BY INTEGRATION?

Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth:

Well, they had to lose first of all their right to control blacks. To have everything and to keep it from, keep us from getting any of the benefits. I think they accommodated Bull Connor, they may have said they were afraid of him, but they weren't really afraid of him. Dr. King said it best when he said power does not give itself up easily nor readily. Even mostly for quote Christian principles. White people really had more to gain than they had to lose because when you free people and work together you can do more. They lost more than they gained by trying to hold us back. I hope I was responsive.
