Interview with William Simmons
QUESTION 43
INTERVIEWER:

UH, NOW DID YOU FEEL THAT UH, BLACK PEOPLE ALREADY HAD THE VOTING RIGHTS THAT WERE BEING DISCUSSED, THAT WERE SUPPOSEDLY THE REASON FOR THIS INVASION? WHAT WAS YOUR FEELING ON THAT?

William Simmons:

Black people have had voting rights in this state all along. They had to meet certain qualifications. The objective of this student invasion was to eliminate all of the qualifications. To have mass voting and it was frankly to advance black political power. It was a very, uh had a very racist objection, objective. And uh, as such it was opposed.
