Interview with Rev. Andrew Young
QUESTION 27
INTERVIEWER:

[unintelligible background conversation] TONE. …TELL ME ABOUT THE MARCH AND THE AFTERMATH.

Rev. Andrew Young:

Well, the… the march from Selma to Montgomery, like every other march was basically made up of women and children. And um, for a group of unsuspecting women and children to be suddenly fired upon with teargas and then a group of big burly Alabama State Troopers start beating them with billy clubs, ah, just produced a sheer mass panic. And then on top of that, they ah brought horses in, once the teargas began to lift, and they followed people and beat them, ah, blocks and blocks way. And it was just a… it was just a savage kind of situation.
