Know all men by these Presents that we
John Brown as principal and Benj. F. McKeWilliam Smith
& Louis DuBrasil as securities are held & firmly bound
unto the State of MifsouriMissouri , in the full and and just
sum of two hundred Dollars for the true payment
whereof we bind ouselves our heirs executors
administrators and afsignsassigns jointly and severally
by thse presents, sealed with our seals and dated this
second day of May eighteen hundred + forty three

The condition ofthis obligation is such that whereas
John Brown a free man of color, has this day obtained
from the County court of Saint Louis County, a
license to remain in this state, as a free person of
color, under the provision of an act of the general
AfsemblyAssembly of MifsouriMissouri , entitled "an act of
more effectually to prevent free persons of color
from coming into this State and for other purposes
approved the twenty third day of February
eighteen hundred and forty-three"_

Now the conditions of this obligation is
such that if the said John Brown shall
be of good behaviour during the continuance
if said license, than the above obligation to
be void otherwise to remain in full force and
