Know all men by these presents that I James
Berry as principal and Duncan S. Carter
as security are held and firmly bound
unto the State of MifsouriMissouri in the just and full
sum of four hundred dollars that is to say
the said James Berry and Duncan S. Carter
in the sum of two hundred dollars each for the
true payment of which we hind ourselves
one and each of our heirs executors administrators
and afsignsassigns jointly and severally firmly by these presents
sealed with our seals and dated this the third day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three.

The condition of the above oblig-
ation is such whereas the said James Berry
has this day obtained from the County Court of St
Louis County a license to remain in the state
under the provisions of an act of the General
AfsemblyAssembly of the State of MifsouriMissouri entitled
"An Act more effectually to prevent free
persons of color from entering into this state
and for other purposes" approved February the twenty third in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three

Now if the said James Berry
shall be of good behavior during the continu-
ance of said license then the above obligation
to be void else to be & remain in full
force and effect.
