In the Circuit Court
March Term 1842
Willis G. Shackleford presented
for proof a deed of Emancipation from Janus
Hays to Mary and Rhoda two negro slaves which
did by order of the Court is spread upon
the Record as follows- "Know all men by
these presents that I Janus Hays of the County
of Montgomery and the state of Missouri for and
in consideration of the services and attention
rendered me by my two slaves Mary and
Rhoda (the former aged about thirty eight
years last July and the latter aged twenty
three years last October) and the further con
=sideration of the sum of sixty dollar to
me in hand paid by the said Mary and
Rhoda the receipt of which I do hereby ac
knowledge have and by these presents do
discharge release set free + entirely acquit
the said Mary + Rhoda from all service
obedience or control of myself my heirs
+c. forever hereby surrendering all right
and title to or in the said Mary + Rhoda
any law or usage to the contrary not with
=standing intending and declaring
this instrument to operate as a perfect and
of emancipation. In writing, whereof I have
hereunto subscribe my name and affix
my seal this 7th day of January A.D 1842
