Know all men by these presents that we
Emily Mason as principal and Lyman
B Shaw as security are held and firmly
bound unto the State of MifsouriMissouri in the first
and full sum of Two hundred Dollars for
the true payment of which sum of money we
bind ourselves, our heirs, our Executors, administra
tors and afsignsassigns , jointly and severally by
these presents sealed with our seals and
dated this Fourth day of May in the year or our Lord Eighteen hundred + forty three
the condition of this obligation is such
that whereas Emily Masonhas this day
obtained from the county court of St
Louis County, a license to remain in
the State as a free person of color
under the provisions of our act Entitled
"An Act more effectually to prevent free
persons of color from entering into this
State and other purposes" Approved
23 February 1843

Now the condition of this bond is such that if the said Emily Mason
shall be of good behavior during
the continuance of said license then
the above obligation to be void otherwise
to remain in full force + virtue
