Know all men by these presents that we
Jacob Padfield, a free negro, as principal and R. Peters W
as security both of the County of St. Louis
and State of MifsouriMissouri are holden and are
firmly bound and obliged to the State of MifsouriMissouri
in the full sum of Four Hundred Dollars, to
wit the said Jacob as principal in the
sum of two hundred Dollars for himself and the
said R. Peters W as security in the sum of
Two Hundred Dollars for himself, to the
payment of which, we do bind our heirs
executors & administrators firmly by these
presents. WitnefsWitness our hands & seals this
third day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen Hundred & forty three.

The condition of this obligation is such
that whereas the said has this day applied
to the County Court of St. Louis County in the
State of MifsouriMissouri for license to reside in
said state as a free negro, under the provisions
of an Act of the Legislation of MifsouriMissouri entitled
"An Act more effectually to prevent free persons of color from entering into this State and
for other purposes", Approved Feb. 23d 1843_

Now if the said Jacob shall be
of good behavior during the continuance
of said license, then this bond shall be
void; otherwise shall remain in good & full force & virtue
