Know all men by these presents,- that
we Newsome D. Artist as principal and
John as security both of St Louis
are held and firmly bound unto the State
of MifsouriMissouri in the sum of four hun
-dred dollars - two hundred dollars each
and no more - to the payment of which
sum well and truly to be made we
bind ourselves our heirs executors and
administrators firmly by these presents _

The condition of this obligation is
such that whereas.- N.D. Artist above
named - has applied to the County Court
of St Louis County - for a license -
on the third day of May 1843 - under a
provision of an Act entitled "an Act more
effectually to prevent free persons of color
from entering into this State and for other
purposes" approved Feb 23-1843- Now if
the said Artist shall be of good behavior
as required by said act then this bond
shall be void otherwise shall remain
in full force and virute - as witness our
hands and seals this 6th day of May 1843Seal
