Publishing Options

Select the publishing options below that best fit your interests and scholarly publishing obligations.

For assistance, consult your school, and see the Washington University Scholarly Communications web site, which has further information on copyright, authors' rights and open access.

The Washington University ETD Repository (administered by the Washington University Libraries) serves two primary functions:

  1. to provide an authoritative copy of scholarly works produced at Washington University, as a form of publication, and
  2. to make these works ultimately freely accessible to a wide audience.

In the Washington University ETD Repository, the publications of record are electronic, which raises certain issues regarding the wide availability of these works. Washington University requires submission of theses and dissertations as a condition of degree conferral, but also recognizes the needs of authors to restrict dissemination (for a specified period) in order to seek publication of content in other formats. The Washington University ETD Repository allows submitters to embargo works for specified periods, as listed below:

Immediate release - I do want my work to be available immediately
Delay release - 6 month embargo
Delay release - 1 year embargo
Delay release - 2 year embargo
Permanent embargo

*Embargoes start from the date we receive your manuscript at the Washington University ETD Repository. Only your citation and abstract will appear in the WUETD database for as long as an embargo is in effect.

Include thesis in major online search engines
Exclude thesis from online indexes*

*By excluding your thesis from indexing, it will be available online, but only discoverable by direct navigation to the directory, usually through passing a direct link to an individual. It will not be included in the online platform with other theses and dissertations.
